Alex Andersons Earns Gamer of the Year Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this year’s Female Gamer of the Week to Senior Alexandra Anderson of the Hurricane High School Softball and Basketball team.

Hurricane High School senior Alex Anderson is closing out her high school athletic career with a season to remember. From overcoming injury to achieving a major milestone, Anderson’s journey has been defined by resilience, leadership, and steady growth.

One of her biggest hurdles came during her final season. “My greatest challenge I faced was spraining my ankle my senior year,” Anderson shared. The injury tested her both physically and mentally. “I overcame this by slowly starting to move on it again and giving it the time to heal instead of forcing it.”

Despite the setback, she returned stronger than ever helping lead her team through its most successful season in recent history. “My most successful and favorite memory in sports was my senior year in basketball. I hit my 1000th point and we had won the most games in this season that the program has had in a while” she said.

When asked how others might describe her, Anderson said, “My coaches and teammates would describe me as someone who is very competitive and doesn’t like to lose.” “The most important thing I’ve learned from playing sports is to never take things for granted. You don’t realize how fast time flies. All the hard practices are worth it,” she reflected. To newcomers stepping into the game, she offers a simple but powerful piece of advice: “Cherish every minute. It’s over before you know it.”

Over the years, she has seen herself mature both on and off the court. “Since my freshman year I think I have grown as a person by becoming a better leader with a better attitude. I stopped worrying about my last at bat or last shot and moved on and it really helped me.” She credits her teammates for leaving a lasting impression. “My teammates have had a huge impact on me. They have shown me what it’s like to have someone’s back no matter what and I’ll cherish the bonds forever.”

As her final season comes to a close, she knows exactly what she’ll miss most. “The thing I will miss most about being a part of a team are the bonds I formed with my teammates.” During difficult moments, she stayed focused on the bigger picture. “The thing that kept me motivated during tough games was remembering I could bounce back from this in the next game. One game isn’t the end of the world.”

Off the court, Alex is involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including Raze Club, the Prom Committee, and the National English Honor Society. Alex is extremely talented in both basketball and softball, showcasing her athleticism across multiple sports. Alex has been named First Team All-State for softball and earned All-Kanawha Valley Team recognition. Anderson was also honored as Hurricane High School’s Female Athlete of the Year, a reflection of her hard work, talent, and impact on the school’s athletic program.

Looking ahead, Anderson is confident the values she’s learned in sports will stay with her. “I think being an athlete prepares me for the next chapter by giving me a good work ethic and making me a hard worker in everything I do.” She points to her dad as her biggest supporter and source of inspiration. And if she could give her freshman self one message? “If I could tell my freshman self something it would be to cherish every minute because it goes by faster than you think.”
