Chill Earns Gamer of the Week Honors
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week to Ethan Chill of Hurricane Track and Field.
Ethan Chill of Hurricane Track and Field has been a consistent, high performer in the throwing events this season. Chill has won 9 of the 10 shot put competitions he has competed in this season, and has the furthest throw in the state this year at 56’ 9.5”. Chill also has the 3rd furthest mark in the discus in AAA this season at 153’ 4”. “This season has been great! I am enjoying going to practice and having fun with the training. I am having fun with my friends while still putting in the work and staying on track,” said Chill.
Chill has seen consistent improvement in distance and placing throughout his career which includes the State Track Meet where he has placed top-5 every year. Last season, he threw a big personal best of 55’ in the shot put to take home 2nd place at the state track meet. “When you look at what makes a complete athlete; hard work, determination, perseverance, continuously striving to get better, positive attitude, and right mind set; Ethan exemplifies all these characteristics. I had no doubt he would break the school record in the shot put, which has stood since the 70’s, and what a better place to break it than at our home meet, with the man who held it, running that event,” said Head Coach Jimmy Cunningham
Chill started throwing the shot and discus in middle school after encouragement from his dad who threw in high school. He planned to focus on football in high school, but says Coach Cunningham encouraged him to continue with the sport and he went on to place 5th at the state meet his freshman year.
When discussing role models and people who have helped him along the way, he pointed to his coaches and parents, as well as his club coach AJ White with Mountain State Throws club, who he says has been with him the whole way and really encouraged him to pursue the sport which he says has definitely paid off. Chill will be joining the Herd this fall throwing for Marshall Track and Field.
“As a coach I can’t begin to describe how proud I am of Ethan and what an honor it has been being his coach for the past 7 years, watching him progress as an athlete and an individual. We will miss having him in our track program, but excited to watch him progress in college competing for my alma mater, Marshall University,” said head coach Jimmy Cunningham
Chill and the rest of the Hurricane Track and Field Team will be back in action on Thursday night at the AAA Region 4 championships in Parkersburg.
Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s male Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc., and The Putnam Herald
