Farry Earns Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Female Gamer of the Week to Junior Bethany Farry of the St. Albans High School track and field team.

Whether she’s soaring over hurdles or clearing the bar in pole vault, Bethany Farry continues to make her mark on the Saint Albans High School track and field program. Farry, a junior, has been a standout for the Red Dragons ever since joining the team in sixth grade. Following in the footsteps of her parents, who both ran track — her father at the collegiate level — Farry has embraced the sport with determination and heart.

"I like that it’s a team sport focused on individual performances," Farry said. "You get to chase your own goals while helping the team succeed."

This season, Farry has already made headlines, winning the High Point Award at both the Dick Dunlap Winfield Classic and the Indian Invitational. At the Indian Invitational, she claimed victories in all four of her events: 100m high hurdles, 300m hurdles, shuttle hurdle relay, and pole vault.

Farry’s personal records include a 16.06 in the 100m high hurdles, a 48.41 in the 300m hurdles, and a school-record 8’9” in pole vault. She was named All-State last season after finishing seventh in the AAA 300m hurdles at the state meet. Her 2024 season bests now stand at 16.25 in the 100m hurdles and 49.00 in the 300m hurdles.

Head coach Brittany McClung praised Farry’s leadership and work ethic. "Bethany has been an absolute joy to coach for the past three years. She’s extremely determined and hardworking, and shows up every single day ready to become better and make those around her better too. She is passionate about the sport and is willing to do whatever is needed to help her team be successful. She is one of the top hurdlers and pole vaulters in the state and continues to progress each week. As a junior, she was chosen to be a team captain, and is a leader not only on the track, but off. She is heavily involved at SAHS and was recently elected to be Student Body President next year. We are so proud of her for all that she has accomplished, and can’t wait to see what the rest of this season and next holds for her!”

Farry serves as a team captain and is heavily involved in school and community activities. She is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, Rho Kappa History Honor Society, and the Drones robotics team. She was recently elected Student Body President for next school year and volunteers regularly at her church's affiliated summer camp and with the "BackPack Snacks" program at Gateway Christian Church.

In addition to track and field, Farry has played volleyball for seven years. Looking ahead, Farry hopes to continue her track career at the collegiate level while pursuing a pre-medical education with the goal of becoming a pediatric physician assistant. For now, she remains focused on her goal of placing in the top eight in at least two events at the upcoming state meet — and with her drive and talent, that goal seems well within reach.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald.
