Smith has earned High Point at every meet this season with his individual performances and contributions to the shuttle hurdle relay. “My season has been going well especially now that its starting to get warmer. I am just trying to improve my school records and try to accomplish as much as I can my senior year,” said Smith.
Smith earned all-conference honors for his runner up performances at the State Meet last season. Head coach Jimmy Cunningham on his star hurdler, “With Jai’Den you are getting the total package in an athlete; talent, hardworking, leadership, great attitude, academics, and all-around great kid. He works hard to continue to get better and better and helps motivate and works with and instruct others on how to do the same. Even after winning a high point award or winning an event, he always has the same attitude, “Still work to do!”
Smith started running in Track his freshman year after physical paper work and Covid prevented him from participating in middle school. Originally, he planned on using Track to train for football, but it quickly became his focus. “I like the level of competition, the recognition that comes with the sport, and all the good memories with my friends, coaches, and family,” said Smith. When discussing role models and people who have helped him along the way he pointed to his family and coaches. In addition to track, Smith is a member of the football team and is currently weighing his options to play football and run track in college.
Looking ahead, Smith says that he is excited to make a run at a state team title this season, and just push hard and celebrate moments with the guys. Hurricane will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the Tudor’s Biscuit World Charleston Relays at Laidley Field.
