Steorts Earns Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week to Ty Steorts of Hurricane Cross Country.

Ty Steorts has been leading the way for Hurricane Cross Country this season. The Junior won the Mountain State Athletic Conference Championship in a meet record time 15:25. Steorts broke the record set by Jacob Burcham in 2010 by 24 seconds. Hurricane senior Aaron Kidd also went under the previous meet record to take second, highlighting Hurricane’s potential this season. Hurricane is currently ranked second in the Run WV Power Rankings. “It has been really fun watching Ty and Aaron train together and making each other better. It is no wonder they are ranked #1 and #2 in the state,” said Head Cross Country Coach Jimmy Cunningham.

Steort’s junior campaign, coming off a state championship last year, has been impressive. Steorts won the Addidas Challenge in Cary, NC in a time of 14:38 and the Louisville Classic in a time of 15:13 this season. “Ty is one of the best athletes I have ever coached, and I can really tell this season he wants to claim his spot as not only the best runner in WV, but one of the best in the nation,” said Cunningham. “Ty is such a talented athlete, but he doesn’t take that for granted. He works hard during practice and he really put in the off-season training leading into the season, and is ready to compete with some of the best in the nation,” he continued.

In addition to Cross Country, Steorts is a stand out performer on the track with a state championship in the 3200m last year. Hurricane will be back in action Thursday October 19th at the Region IV championships at the Huntington YMCA Kennedy Center.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s male Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc., and The Putnam Herald.
