Johnson Awarded Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Female Gamer of the Week to Senior, Antonela Johnson of the Winfield High School basketball team.

Winfield General’s shooting guard #3 Antonela Johnson is having a great senior season leading the team in scoring, assists, and 3pt. fg% and is second in steals and fg%.  “Antonela is having a great senior season and has emerged as a team leader to a very young Winfield team. She leads not only through her success on gamedays but through her commitment to practice. Most importantly, Antonela plays for an “audience of 1”, an indication of her unashamed faith” Coach Andy Johnson.

Johnson began her basketball career in 3rd grade and has been playing for 10 years now. Antonela loves the game of basketball because all her friends play so she enjoys being able to spend time with them. A role model Johnson has is her aunt, “She played basketball growing up and she's my biggest fan. She always supports me and I’m so thankful for her”.

When discussing Johnson’s team’s success this season, she stated “I think our team has been successful because we are getting better at playing as a team. We have the heart and want to win for each other. Our defense has been strong which leads into our offense”. A team goal Antonela has for the remainder of this season includes winning sectionals and making it to states, as well as an individual goal of becoming an all-state player.

Off the court Johnson is a member of National Honor Society, United for Christ, Fellowship of Christian athletes, Mu Alpha Theta, and Younglife. Plans for Antonela after high school include going to Marshall University to pursue a degree in nursing and later enrolling into CRNA school to become a nurse anesthetist.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc., and The Putnam Herald.
